In our previous blog on “The Bloom”—we discussed cannabinoids and sleep. However, the interaction between cannabidiol (CBD) and our bodies is about so much more than potentially helping with sleep issues. Another exciting role that has been studied is CBD's effect on recovery and pain management.

If you’re new to hemp-derived wellness, or just need a little refresher, CBD is one of many compounds called cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plant. CBD continues to gain popularity as a potentially effective treatment option for many health issues. This is further underscored by the versatile range of products in which it can be successfully used, such as topicals and ingestibles.

Working Towards a Balanced Future of Recovery & Pain Management with CBD

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a complex system within the human body (similar to the more widely known endocrine or nervous systems). This system is one of the body’s most vital regulatory systems and is responsible for helping to maintain a state of homeostasis.

Research suggests that the CBD compound interacts with endocannabinoid receptors in the brain and immune system. The responses that CBD creates may serve to balance the ECS, which in turn can provide anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

CBD products have shown the ability to offer a wide range of temporary relief from pain and soreness. High concentrations of CBD (applied topically) activate the ECS through receptors in our skin which are responsible for pain and inflammation management.

How Does CBD Help in Recovery & Pain Management?

In addition to the above, a separate study also suggests that using CBD properly and with correct dosages can help to reduce pain and inflammation. The researchers also found that subjects were not likely to build up a tolerance to the effects of CBD.

While more research is still necessary, these studies point positively towards the increased role of hemp-derived compounds for pain and recovery management. A 2019 study indicated large numbers of surgeons may be interested in using CBD for post-surgery pain management, while a 2021 study notes participants’ positive attitudes and successful reports regarding CBD treatment for pain-related conditions.

Finding the Right CBD Consumption Method for You

While it’s great that many oral and topical CBD products are now available on the market, the type you choose makes all the difference for your personal wellness preferences.

Ingestible CBD

Ingesting CBD by oral swishing is one of the best ways to support overall mind and body wellness because it absorbs directly into the bloodstream. Consumed in this way, CBD has a systemic effect and is widely used to provide relief from pain, encourage better sleep, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

While it may be tempting to reach for those tasty gummies or CBD-infused chocolates, it’s important to note that the rate of absorption decreases significantly when you swallow your dose. Our stomach acids can kill up to 40% of the CBD before it can have any effect at all. CBD Oil allows for the CBD to be absorbed through the capillaries in the mouth before it gets to the stomach.

Topical CBD

Topical CBD is commonly used for targeted relief of sore muscles, arthritis, or dermatological conditions like eczema and psoriasis. What’s more, when combined with the aromatherapeutic benefits of essential oils, topical products have also been shown to help with anxiety.
